The Pilgrimage
Each year the Brothers and Sisters of the Order walk together a stage of the Camino del Santo Grial, the route of the Holy Chalice from the Pyrenees of Aragon to the Cathedral of Valencia.
The Camino del Santo Grial
The Camino del Santo Grial follows the journey of the Holy Chalice from the Pyrenees of Aragon to the Cathedral of Valencia. It crosses Romanesque monasteries, mountain villages and the plains of the Levante, linking the places where the chalice was hidden, guarded and venerated across the centuries.
Its spiritual starting point is the Royal Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, built beneath an overhang of rock, where the chalice was kept through the Middle Ages. Its goal is the Chapel of the Holy Chalice in Valencia Cathedral.
The route is promoted by the International Association of the Camino del Santo Grial, presided over by the Patron of the Order, Ana María Mafé García. The Order walks it in collaboration with the Association.
Places of the road
San Juan de la Peña
The royal monastery of Aragon guarded the chalice through the Middle Ages under the protection of the Kings of Aragon. The pilgrimage of the Order begins here.
Huesca
The city of Saint Lawrence, Patron of the Order. According to tradition, the deacon sent the cup of the Last Supper here to save it from the persecution of Valerian.
Valencia
Since 1437 the Holy Chalice has been kept in the Cathedral of Valencia, where it is venerated in its own chapel. On Holy Thursday it is carried to the high altar for the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.
The annual pilgrimage
Brothers and Sisters from different countries meet on the road and walk a stage of the Camino together, in prayer and in fellowship. The pilgrimage is the principal annual gathering of the Order.
The itinerary and the programme of each pilgrimage are communicated to members by the Office of the Pilgrimage.
Preparation
The weeks before departure are a time of preparation: prayer, physical training, reading and sobriety. The Order walks in the conviction that faith is not only studied, but carried on one’s own feet.
